Community First

Community First was a unique England-wide initiative which launched in 2011 alongside the coalition government, and it closed at the end of March 2015. It provided a unique opportunity to make donations go further by offering a 50% match from the government.

How did it work?

Community First allowed community foundations to offer donors a 50% uplift on their endowment donations through government match funding, providing a catalyst for the work community foundations undertake to strengthen communities across the UK.

Including endowment investment returns accrued over the programme, the total collective endowment pot now sits at more than £130m. So far, Community First has awarded 2,373 grants worth £5.8m to local causes across England.

Who was eligible?

Community First match funds were available to individuals, families, companies and dormant trusts in England and the significant endowment raised goes towards supporting social action at a local level.

Support from local community foundations

Local community foundations managed all the administration, due diligence, reporting and compliance with the Charity Commission. Their expert teams helped donors to find the right organisations and causes to work with, helping them to support the causes they cared about in the most effective way. Donors were kept up-to-date with exactly how their money was being spent and the difference it was making.
